When Silence Surrounds

Hello again literary lovelies!

My apologies for not having my usual Sunday post, as I have been under the weather with some weird stomach bug for the last week. I spent most of Saturday and Sunday horizontal on my bed.

So here is my Wednesday Writing Prompt for this week:

The silence woke her. Her brows barely pinched as her eyes opened into cat-like slits.

It didn’t register right away, what it was that brought her back to consciousness, until she realized it was an absence; a complete lack of sound.

She lay there for a couple of seconds trying to listen actively for those noises she was used to within her home: the hum of the refrigerator, the general creaks of her house in the middle of the night. Nothing resonated out at her, as though the house itself was holding its breath. She glanced at her clock to check if the power was out, but the blood-red lights looked back on her in silence.

She waited for the usual out-of-doors suspects: the midnight bird chirps, (who up till this moment generally annoyed her) the sounds of her neighbours playing video games well into the night (also a regular frustrating occurrence), but there was nothing.

She rustled her own covers to dissipate her own fears of some middle of the night hearing loss and the crackle tugged her lips into a grin which was immediately wiped away by a resounding thud.

Was the thud inside or out? Was it a figment of her imagination due to the silence which had woken her? The thoughts raced across her forehead as it wrinkled in wait, but for what?

She noticeable stilled beneath the duvet she had just wrinkled in jest, as if try to suck herself in the silence that engulfed her; the silence that had woken her.

The thud sounded again. This time she was sure it was inside the house. An energy spilled out around the room, thick like fog and hung just above the carpet.

Should she wait? Was she frozen in the moment between fight and flight? What was she going to do? What would you do?

As always thank you so much dear readers for tuning in for this Writer Prompt Wednesday. If you have any suggestions or would add anything, I would love to know!

I wish you all the best and look forward to hearing from you!

Honestly Austen

Postscript: Do you know if you are a fight or flight person? I heard you can actually also be a freeze person as well.
