Reviewing Maggie by Mya O’Malley

*Before I even start can we just note how amazing this cover art is! I am a sucker for a great book cover and this one captures the feel of this novel completely!*

Goodreads Synopsis:

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to share your home with an unearthly spirit who can’t find closure? Living on the edge of a cemetery with souls dating back to the 1700s would be enough to spook anyone, but Naomi finds it oddly romantic, and becomes inspired to write her next novel. Why not, when her muse, Maggie, calls to her from beyond her own window?

After all, the story couldn’t possibly be as complicated as Naomi’s own love life. Torn between Ryan, the mysterious and seemingly perfect man she just started dating, and Bryce, the sexy single dad who recently moved in next door, Naomi must navigate the tangled web of dating—all while trying to solve the mystery of Maggie’s death.

When things turn dangerous, Naomi quickly learns whom she can trust and, more importantly, whom she can’t. Will she be able to write Maggie’s story and finally give Maggie the peace she deserves?

My Favourite Quotes:

“What if one of her characters was out there in the cold outdoors, their story untold?”

“… needed counselling in order to heal. She wasn’t qualified to help him. Realizing the fact and removing herself was the best she could do.” (I removed the character name from this quote so as not to provide a spoiler in any way.)

“Relationships were so challenging. They were fragile. In the beginning, middle, and end.”

My Thoughts:

Let us begin with one of the most desired experiences you can have as an author and a reader: I couldn’t put the book down!

I was spellbound by the story and the characters. From the first chapter, I felt a strong connection to Naomi. There was so much about her character and her experience with her ex which I felt mirrored my past relationship.

Not to sound like a broken record and anyone who has been reading my reviews will note, that I continue to mention how I feel like there are books which need to cross our paths as readers. That there is something essential for us to glean from the pages.

I needed to read Maggie. It is as simple as that. I feel like there is an important path I need to travel along which this book helped me to realize. Like Naomi, I too have been in a serious relationship with a man who was for all intents and purposes a flawed man. Like Naomi, I do not like to talk about it. Many people do not know fully the experiences that happened between him and I. There is a lot I am still not ready to share even after almost 10 years. But my inability to forgive not only him and myself have set me back in a lot of ways.

Through the strength and wisdom found within the characters and storyline of this novel, I feel like maybe I am just one step closer to healing. As an author myself, you hope your readers can connect with your characters, can take away important aspects of your work with them. I know I have.

Thank you Mya O’Malley for creating a story which was something I needed. The paranormal aspects kept me enthralled and the important threads of forgiveness and friendship connected with my own reality. Your work has meant a great deal to me.

I heart Maggie by Mya O’Malley this much:
