I held onto the sound…

Hello, literary lovelies!

We find ourselves mid-week and ready for a Writing Prompt Wednesday! I hope you have all been well and enjoy the short story I have for you today!

I closed my eyes and held onto the sound, as I tried to grasp the translucent memories of a life I could not remember.

I did not want to open my eyes. I did not want to let go of his rich vibrato as it flowed throughout the train. He wasn’t speaking to me directly, but his voiced ebbed from one end of the carriage to the other as though it targeted my seat in particular.

The memory flipped beneath the surface with the lilt of his voice and I tried again to grasp at it.

Within the shallows of my mind, two images became opaque: A room whose darkness had become bearable once perception had finally focused, and a floor littered with what had first thought to have been sticks but ended up being pieces of identities long-lost.

I reeled back from reflections at the same time his voice stopped, sending ripples across my mind which scattered the images.

I flooded my eyes with reality needing to find his location, and curiosity pulled my head into the center aisle only to be met with blackness as it collided with a passing suitcase.

I became aware of a thumb as it touched my temple, attached to fingers which reached around the back of my skull as though to steady me from a movement I had no intention of taking. My eyelids felt too heavy to rise and when they finally pulled themselves open, were met with only unfocused light.

The thumb moved and I zeroed in on a face I had never see before, but somehow instantly recognized and whose eyes sparked back in the same recollection.

The face belonged to the voice which had stirred up a memory of a life I never remember living.

Alright dearest readers, as always I would love to hear your thoughts on where I took this prompt and where you might have taken it! I wish you the best possible Wednesday!

Postscript: Should I solely devote my Wednesdays to writing prompts or switch between writing prompts and Who Wore it Best Wednesday? Thoughts?

  1. I love your writing prompts, but Who Wore it Best makes for a nice change of pace 🙂 I’d vote for switching back and forth.

…I love that you took this prompt to a more abstract and less obvious place. When I saw it I was like, “Hm…there are only two ways to go with this,” and you proved me totally wrong 🙂

    • Thank you! You make my day with your lovely comments! I think I might just switch back and forth between them. It does make for a nice change of pace.

Thank you! It was so interesting where the prompt actually brought me. I was definitely like, “Well this is different…” You are too kind!
